Why can calculus make serious alterations?

Beyond certain years of age almost everybody has calculus. Calculus deposits mainly in the vicinity of the ductal orifices of major salivary glands, so at the lingual surfaces of lower incisors and at the buccal surfaces of upper molars. Calculus exerts its harmful effects mostly on these areas.

Tartar provides excellent culture medium for those bacteria, which induce gingivitis first and then the inflammation and destruction of periodontal tissues as well. As a consequence of the process teeth might get loose and can be missed.

How to get rid of tartar?
Calculus can be removed efficiently only with the help of a dentist. A professional instrument is available for this purpose. This is the so called ultrasonic scaler, the tip of which can vibrate with a frequency of 24-42000 Hz. During the operation the machine vaporizes cooling water. Due to the ultrasonic vibration air-bubbles are generated, which break up the calculus. The working mechanism itself shows us, that the ultrasonic scaling is an absolutely painless treatment.

With the professional oral hygienic treatment not only the tartar, but also the cariogen debris is removed. After the removal of calculus polishing is needed with a special polishing material dispersed on tooth surface by means of polishing brushes and rubbers. Oral hygienic visits prevent the inflammation of the gum, periodontal diseases and caries. All these contribute to the good breath and general feeling, as well as aesthetic dentition of the patient.

Inflammation of the gum

Problems with the gum occur very often. According to surveys 90 % of the population suffers from inflammation of the gum. If we establish the diagnose well in time and choose the appropriate treatment, the inflamed gum can regenerate completely.

Why does inflammation happen?

The inlammation of the gum (gingivitis) is caused by the bacteria settling down in the debris and tartar. The defence mechanism of the gum leads to local inflammation, therefore the gum becomes red and starts to bleed. Inflammation in this period doesn’t accompany pain, that’s why people usually don’t realize the disease.

Why is inflammation dangerous?

Only a few patient know that the long-lasting inflammation of the gum might become a focus of the organism. Bacteria get into the blood circulation from the inflammed gingiva continuously. These microorganisms are disseminated throughout the body to set up secondary sites, or foci, of infection in other tissues. Complaints of the joints, dermal alterations, renal-, heart- and vascular disorders, problems in connection with the hair are mostly associated with focal infections. Many allergic syndromes develop due to focal infections as well.

If the inflammation of the gum remains untreated for a long time then the margin of the gingiva migrates towards the apex. This process isn’t reversible any more.

This process involves the pathologic deepening of the gingival sulcus produced by destruction of the supporting tissues and apical proliferation of the epithelial attachment. Ulceration of the pocket epithelium lining is characteristic. Bacteria in the pockets can easily grow, because the patient is unable to clean this area. Owing to this reason the inflammation flares up occasionally which is accompained by pain usually.
